Ping is a computer network administration utility that helps in determining whether the Internet Protocol (IP) network address is accessible or not. It also gauges round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination client. It is also used basically to troubleshoot internet connection issues. Ping functions by relaying Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to the target host and waiting for an ICMP response. During this process the utility gauges time frame between the relaying to response registered (round trip delay) and registers any loss of packets. Several freeware and shareware Ping utilities are available for personal computers.
